Reporting to the Manager, Administration of the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University, and working in close collaboration with the Director, the Communications Officer develops and implements communications plans to inform and engage internal and external publics. The Officer provides expert advice and support to internal stakeholders.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Manages ISoN Communication Office which include the implementation and revision of procedures and policies, as well as develop and implement communication plans in a manner consistent with the University, Faculty and stakeholders’ missions and goals.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of stakeholders’ missions, goals, structures, and operational challenges, as well as an understanding/appreciation of the science being conducted.
  • Provide professional communications advice, support and quality control to advance strategic and operational goals.
  • Ensure stakeholders’ and partners’ web presence reflects best practices, latest McGill functionalities and up-to-date content, in collaboration with the departments and the Faculty’s web experts.
  • Manage the ISoN website to ensure it promotes the School’s excellence, is up to date, showcases research and training milestones, and attracts external users of our scientific core platforms.
  • Write, edit, translate and post executive messages and stories for various media, such as websites, e-newsletters, e-broadcasts, and social media.
  • Support the Director’s Office & Ingram School of Nursing Operating Committee (IOC) with key internal communications to students, staff, and faculty including distribution of ISoN e-newsletters
  • Oversee graphic design, photographic, audio-visual, print and other resources, as needed, to post to websites and other media.
  • Work closely with the Faculty’s Communications Office on media issues, stories, and requests, identifying in-house experts, and developing key messages and story pitches.
  • Is a member of the Ingram Operating Committee
  • Support key events, from development of promotional materials to event registration and logistics.
  • Plan and develop communication/outreach campaigns and materials including, for example, promotional copy, presentations, brochures, photos, video clips, web, and social media.
  • Support ISoN’s Advancement goals by working closely with the Associate Dean and Director of ISoN and the FMHS’ Advancement Office to create requests for funding and stewardship reports to share with philanthropic individuals and institutions
  • Act as liaison with stakeholders (e.g., faculty, staff and Faculty’s University Advancement Office), as well as with partners in the Faculty’s network of teaching hospitals and research institutes, to solicit input and collaborate on joint communication initiatives, as needed.
  • Liaise between stakeholders to develop communication synergies and share practices.
  • Develop and implement best practices and standard processes to support stakeholders’ communication needs, such as style guides and templates, in collaboration with the Faculty’s Communications Office.
  • Engage in the Faculty Communications Office community, to align with respect to branding, emerging priorities, style guides and quality standards, and to cultivate a network of helpful professional resources.
  • Screens the publicity
  • Support special ISoN and Faculty projects, as needed.

Other qualifying Skills

Science communication experience and/or education is a major asset.

Experience in successfully developing and implementing communications plans in a higher education, health care or nonprofit environment. Scientific knowledge and experience are major assets. Strong relationship-building and consulting/advising expertise. Demonstrated ability to create high quality communication materials on a range of topics, with emphasis on outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills. Versed in planning and coordinating web, print, graphic, photographic, video and social media projects. Experience developing graphic, photographic and video content a major asset. Detail-oriented. Strong organizational, priority-setting, problem-solving and listening. Ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders and to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, changing, deadline-oriented environment. Demonstrated professionalism and discretion. Ability to anticipate possible difficulties, take initiative, troubleshoot and implement solutions. Creative. Proven ability to work with computer applications and tools related to the field of communications (Microsoft Office365, web, social media, etc.), as well as databases and presentation software. English and French, spoken and written is required.
