Job Description

Bring your database engineering expertise to the evolving world of cybersecurity. If you’re an experienced database engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and wants to expand your impact into cybersecurity, this could be a compelling next step in your career.

Allstate internal Business Title: Service Consultant – Database Exposure Intelligence

Allstate Job Profile & Family: Lead Consultant- Threat & Incident Response

Team and overall work scope

  • The team operates within a newly established Exposure Management function in the broader cybersecurity organization, focused on modernizing how the enterprise identifies, prioritizes, and mitigates security vulnerabilities shifting from traditional patch approaches to a more strategic focus on true business risk and exploitability
  • Individual Contributor/ Service Consultant roles are designed to bring in deep respective domain expertise (network, endpoint, cloud, identity, infrastructure, Databases & Data Stores, etc.) to bridge the gap between security insights and practical remediation strategies
  • Exposure Intelligence Service Consultant – Databases & Data Stores is the SME responsible for identifying and prioritizing exposure risk across data platforms, including RDBMS, NoSQL systems, data warehouses, object storage, and data permissions models.
  • This role applies CTEM (Continuous Threat Exposure Management) model principles to identify exploitable exposure conditions that lead to unauthorized access, data exfiltration, or privilege misuse, partnering with data platform and engineering teams to reduce real enterprise exposure.

About the role and the ideal candidate:

  • We’re looking for a Senior Database Engineer who is passionate about database and data-platform engineering and interested in applying that expertise to complex security challenges.
  • This is an engineering-first, security-focused role for someone experienced with databases, data stores, permissions, access models, and enterprise data environments. You do not need to be a dedicated database security professional. We're looking for a strong engineer who has gained security exposure through their work and wants to deepen that expertise.

Success Measures

  • Reduction in high-impact data exposure conditions (permissions and access pathways).
  • Improved visibility and prioritization of data-access-related attack paths.
  • Stronger partnership with data platform teams and fewer recurring access control failures.

What You’ll Do

  • Apply your database and data-platform engineering expertise across RDBMS, NoSQL, data warehouses, object storage, and related data services. Analyze database configurations, permissions, access models, storage, encryption, and service-to-service access through a security lens.
  • Investigate issues such as overly broad access, stale entitlements, exposed storage, weak auditability, and misconfigured access policies.
  • Use queries, logs, and technical evidence to validate potential exposures and understand their real-world impact. Identify potential attack paths that could lead to unauthorized data access, privilege expansion, or sensitive-data exposure.
  • Partner with database, data platform, cloud, and security teams to develop practical remediation strategies and preventative engineering guardrails.
  • Help prioritize which issues matter most based on exploitability and potential business impact rather than treating every technical finding equally.
  • Help reduce recurring database and data-access risks through better engineering practices, configurations, and controls.

Required Qualifications

  • Interest in developing deeper expertise in data security, attack-path analysis, and Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM). The underlying role applies CTEM principles to data-platform exposure.
  • Strong hands-on experience in database engineering, database administration, or data-platform engineering.
  • Experience working with RDBMS and/or NoSQL database technologies and their underlying architecture, configuration, and operations.
  • Solid understanding of database authentication, authorization, roles, permissions, and access models.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex database or data-platform issues using queries, logs, or other technical data.
  • Experience identifying or remediating overly broad permissions, stale access, misconfigured storage, or service-to-service access concerns.
  • Understanding of how database and data-layer weaknesses could contribute to privilege escalation, unauthorized access, or data exposure.
  • Working knowledge of database hardening, access controls, encryption, vulnerability remediation, or other security considerations encountered through database engineering work.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical issues and translate them into practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work across database, platform, cloud, engineering, and cybersecurity teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with data warehouses, object storage, cloud databases, or cloud data services.
  • Experience with database hardening and secure configuration practices.
  • Familiarity with cloud data services and their permission models.
  • Exposure to data-access governance, security engineering, vulnerability management, or exposure management.

What Makes This Opportunity Different?

  • This isn’t traditional database engineering, and it isn’t traditional cybersecurity. It brings the two together.
  • Instead of focusing only on operating and optimizing databases, you’ll use your engineering expertise to understand how database and datastore environments can become exposed and how better engineering can reduce that risk.
  • For a database engineer who has developed an interest in security, this is an exciting opportunity to stay rooted in engineering while growing your expertise in data security, exposure management, and cybersecurity.
