About the role

We are seeking a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) / Medical Technologist (MT) with a strong interest in technology to join our IT team as a full-time, on-site Epic Beaker Analyst. In this role, you will leverage your hands-on laboratory experience to design, build, implement, optimize, and maintain our Epic Beaker (Inpatient, Outpatient, and/or Anatomic Pathology) application. You will serve as the crucial link between clinical laboratory operations and information technology, ensuring that our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system supports safe, compliant, and highly efficient lab workflows.

Key Responsibilities

· On-Site System Build & Configuration: Design, build, and maintain Epic Beaker components, including laboratory tests, panels, results routing, specimen collection workflows, and instrument interfaces.

· Workflow Optimization: Partner directly on-site with laboratory leadership, pathologists, and technicians to analyze existing workflows and design system optimizations that reduce turnaround times and manual errors.

· Instrument & Third-Party Integration: Collaborate with interface teams to build and troubleshoot connections between Epic Beaker and laboratory automation lines, analyzers, reference labs, and middle-ware solutions (e.g., Data Innovations).

· Application & Go-Live Support: Provide tier-2 and tier-3 application support. Actively participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule to resolve critical system issues. Work varied shifts (including nights, weekends, and holidays) as needed to provide support during system go-lives, upgrades, and major rollouts.

· Testing & Upgrades: Develop test scripts and execute thorough validation, system integration, and regression testing for Epic upgrades and custom build modifications.

· Regulatory & Quality Compliance: Ensure all lab system builds comply with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and HIPAA regulations.

· End-User Training: Author technical documentation and train laboratory staff, phlebotomists, and clinicians on new Epic Beaker features and system workflows.

Required Qualifications

· Education: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related biological science.

· Certification: Active certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP, AMT, or an equivalent body.

· Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of clinical laboratory experience (Generalist, Microbiology, Blood Bank, or Anatomic Pathology).

· Epic Certification: Active certification in Epic Beaker (Clinical Laboratory and/or Anatomic Pathology) is highly preferred. (Note: Candidates with strong clinical laboratory experience and a demonstrated technical aptitude who are ready to achieve certification within 6 months of hire will also be considered.)

· Flexibility & Availability: Commitment to a standard M-F 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM on-site schedule, with the ability to work a flexible schedule including off-shifts during critical activation periods and fulfill mandatory on-call duties.

Preferred Skills & Competencies

· Informatics Experience: Prior experience as a lab super-user, LIS analyst, or participating in a laboratory information system validation preferred.

· Technical Aptitude: Understanding of HL7 interface messaging, instrument connectivity, or database structure preferred.

· Problem Solving: Excellent analytical skills to troubleshoot complex system errors and map out sequential testing workflows under high-pressure go-live situations.

· Communication: Exceptional verbal and written English communication skills to effectively translate complex clinical laboratory workflows into technical requirements.
