About the role
Job Description
North 40 Outfitters is looking for a Controller to join our Home Office team in Great Falls, MT. We believe that each team member plays a vital role in the success of our company. We are looking for authentic and enthusiastic people who love our lifestyle and believe in service before self.
As the Controller at North 40 Outfitters, you will lead the day-to-day accounting function and play a key role in maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and effectiveness of our financial operations. You will oversee financial close and reporting, general ledger activity, inventory accounting, cash management, accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, tax compliance, audits, and internal controls across our multi-location retail organization. This role serves as an important financial partner to company leadership and store operations, requiring strong accounting expertise, sound judgment, and an understanding of the operational realities of a high-volume retail environment.
This full-time position requires the ability to work all scheduled shifts between the business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Schedule flexibility is required based on business needs and may include periodic travel to North 40 locations or other business sites.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and strong financial controls.
- Self-motivated and dependable leader with the ability to take initiative, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, GAAP, financial controls, and sound accounting practices.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Significant progressive accounting experience, including financial close, general ledger, reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Experience leading accounting operations within a retail, multi-location, inventory-intensive, or high-transaction-volume environment strongly preferred.
- Experience overseeing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and producing accurate, timely financial statements.
- Experience maintaining accounting policies, reconciliations, documentation, approval controls, and segregation of duties.
- Strong understanding of inventory accounting, cost of goods sold, gross margin, and the financial reporting requirements of a retail organization.
- Experience overseeing cash accounting, bank reconciliations, store deposits, ACH transactions, checks, wire transfers, and other disbursements.
- Experience with cash-flow forecasting, treasury management, and monitoring banking activity for unusual or unauthorized transactions.
- Experience maintaining fixed-asset records and ensuring appropriate capitalization and depreciation of buildings, equipment, technology, vehicles, fixtures, and leasehold improvements.
- Experience tracking capital expenditures and projects from approval through completion and reconciling expenditures against approved budgets.
- Experience coordinating sales and use tax preparation, reconciliation, and filing, as well as supporting federal, state, and local tax compliance.
- Experience coordinating financial statement audits and responding to external reviews, tax audits, or governmental inquiries.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, document, implement, and continuously improve internal financial controls, segregation of duties, and approval authorities.
- Ability to establish appropriate financial controls for decentralized, multi-location retail operations and conduct periodic reviews of financial processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify trends, variances, anomalies, and potential errors and provide meaningful recommendations to leadership.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead, develop, and hold accounting team members accountable to clear responsibilities, deadlines, controls, and performance expectations.
- Ability to develop cross-training and succession plans for critical accounting functions.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to build productive working relationships with store leadership, Operations, Merchandising, Human Resources, IT, Loss Prevention, Supply Chain, and executive leadership.
- Experience with ERP systems; Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience preferred.
- CPA or CMA designation preferred but not required.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling proprietary, employee, customer, banking, and financial information.
- Ability to travel periodically to North 40 locations or other business sites as needed.
