The ministry has the following responsibilities:

  • Jobs: helping address employment needs, establishing and enforcing Alberta’s employment standards and the laws governing the health and safety of Alberta’s workplaces, as well as establishing fair and transparent governance practices for regulated professions and designated occupations or trades.

  • Economy: supporting Alberta entrepreneurs, businesses and communities to drive growth and job creation.

  • Trade and investment: attracting investment, promoting trade and supporting Alberta businesses’ abilities to access new markets, with a focus on defence, manufacturing and other key sectors.
  • Immigration: attracting international talent to address labour market gaps, providing credential recognition services and enhancing access to settlement services to support full participation in Alberta’s economy and society.

Role Responsibilities

The Ministry of Jobs, Economy and Trade is seeking a Senior Economist to lead advanced economic research, analysis, and modelling that supports strategic decision-making across government. In this role, you will provide expert advice on Alberta's economy, competitiveness, investment climate, and economic development opportunities, helping to inform policies and initiatives that support economic growth and prosperity.

Working on high-profile and complex issues, you will lead economic impact studies, econometric modelling, financial analysis, business case assessments, and environmental scans. You will collaborate with senior leaders, policy experts, and stakeholders across government to deliver evidence-based recommendations that support policy, program, and investment decisions.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced economist looking to apply their expertise to meaningful work that has a direct impact on Alberta's economic future.

As the Senior Economist, you will:

  • Lead complex economic research, analysis, and modeling projects to support strategic decision-making, policy development, and economic growth initiatives.
  • Conduct current-state, economic impact, financial, and competitiveness analyses to identify opportunities, risks, and trends affecting Alberta’s economy.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative economic analysis to support information requests, briefing materials, action requests, and policy development.
  • Develop and apply advanced economic and econometric models, research frameworks, and analytical approaches to evaluate policy options and inform recommendations.
  • Translate complex economic data into clear, actionable insights and provide briefings, reports, and recommendations to executives and stakeholders.
  • Provide expert advise on economic, industry, investment, and competitiveness issues, including the interpretation and application of economic data and research findings.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across government, industry, and research organizations to support initiatives, and advance evidence-based decision-making.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:  Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting economic research, analysis, and modelling to support decision-making.
  • Experience interpreting complex economic data and communicating findings to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of economic trends and factors influencing Alberta, Canadian, and global economics.

 

Assets:

  • Experience leading complex economic studies or research initiatives.
  • Experience developing and applying economic impact, econometric, or forecasting models.
  • Experience working with Statistics Canada data and large datasets.
  • Knowledge of competitiveness, trade, investment attraction, or economic development issues.

Notes

This is a full-time permanent position working 36.25 hours per week in downtown Edmonton.
