Forestry and Parks are responsible for managing our forests, public lands and provincial parks. Our Ministry accountabilities include:

• Growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector.
• Protecting Alberta’s forests from wildfire.
• Preserving our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans.
• Enabling access to public lands for recreation and purposes while prioritizing conservation.
• Managing public lands and balancing sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

Within the Ministry, Land Operations Division, delivers an integrated approach to the management of provincial Crown Land. The work of the Division reflects the full range of users of the province’s Crown land including conservation, recreation, tourism, energy, forestry, agriculture and traditional land uses.

Role Responsibilities

The Hay-Zama Bison Technician supports senior and area Wildlife and Species at Risk (SAR) Biologists in the delivery of the Wood Bison Conservation and Recovery Program in northwestern Alberta.

This position plays a key role in coordinating and supporting all aspects of the Hay-Zama bison harvest season, including engagement with Indigenous and non-Indigenous harvesters, issuing licenses and registration certificates, collecting and processing disease monitoring samples, and liaising with local communities and stakeholders.

The role also contributes to the implementation of approved recovery actions for Wood Bison, such as population surveys, habitat monitoring, and conflict mitigation measures.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the delivery of the Hay-Zama bison harvest season by issuing Indigenous hunter licenses and compulsory registration certificates, collecting and processing biological samples for disease monitoring, and providing information and coordination support to harvesters.
• Conduct and assist with wildlife surveys, data collection, and field monitoring activities (ground-based and aerial).
• Compile, organize, and manage biological data for entry into the Fish and Wildlife Management Information System (FWMIS).
• Support human-bison conflict management and safety awareness initiatives.
• Collaborate with Dene Tha’ First Nation partners, Indigenous communities, and municipal stakeholders to advance bison conservation and recovery objectives.

Qualifications

• Two-year completed diploma in Natural Resources Technology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, or a closely related field.
• Valid Driver’s License (Class 5).

 Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year education

 Assets:

• Current First Aid certification (CPR Level C).
• Experience in wildlife or natural resource fieldwork, including data collection, sampling, and monitoring.
• Experience using GPS, GIS (ArcGIS), and data management tools for recording and analyzing field data.
• Experience preparing technical summaries, reports, or database entries related to wildlife or environmental programs.
• Experience participating in aerial or ground-based wildlife surveys is considered an asset.
• Experience operating field equipment such as 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, and boats in remote or rugged environments.

• This competition is recruiting for seasonal wage position that would begin November 1, 2026, and end March 31, 2027 (5 months), based in High Level, Alberta. ·
• The role is primarily field based in remote and rugged areas of northwest Alberta. Fieldwork may require extended stays in
• camps with limited amenities, exposure to variable weather, and physically demanding tasks.
• Field operations involve the use of 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, boats, and helicopters. Flexibility in work hours is required to support seasonal bison management activities.
