The Alberta Public Service works to build a stronger province for current and future generations. We make a difference in the lives of Albertans through rewarding and diverse career opportunities.

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) is responsible for prosecuting the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. ACPS also works with justice system stakeholders and the community at large to promote safe communities and implement alternative approaches to the administration of justice.

The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO), a branch within ACPS, is responsible for the prosecution of provincial statute offences. As a provincial prosecutor, you will prosecute provincial offences before the Alberta Court of Justice and ensure that matters are advanced in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations, and ACPS guidelines, protocols, and policies.

Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to make a meaningful contribution to public safety, fair decision-making, and confidence in Alberta’s justice system?

The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office is seeking a provincial prosecutor to join a dynamic team responsible for prosecuting provincial statute offences across Alberta. In this role, you will represent the public interest in the Alberta Court of Justice, assess and prepare prosecution files, conduct court proceedings, and help ensure matters are resolved fairly, effectively, and in accordance with the law.

This position involves work that ranges from routine provincial offence matters to complex and technical prosecutions. You will exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced, adversarial environment while working closely with law enforcement, defence counsel, agents, self-represented defendants, victims, witnesses, and other justice system participants.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Representing the Attorney General in Alberta Court of Justice proceedings, including trials, pre-trial conferences, sentencing hearings, and related appearances.
  • Reviewing and screening files involving adult and youth defendants by assessing evidence, charge appropriateness, public interest considerations, and the reasonable likelihood of conviction.
  • Communicating the Crown’s position and negotiating appropriate resolutions with defence counsel, agents, and self-represented defendants, including through the Traffic Ticket Digital Service.
  • Preparing for court by analyzing legal and factual issues, organizing evidence, identifying and preparing witnesses, and drafting oral and written submissions.
  • Responding to disclosure requests.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of provincial offence prosecution procedures, guidelines, and practices.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to interpret legislation, assess evidence, and make principled decisions under pressure.
  • Persuasive advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills for courtroom appearances and resolution discussions.
  • The ability to build and maintain professional relationships with a broad range of justice system participants.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage high-volume caseloads and shifting priorities.
  • Professionalism, resilience, initiative, and a commitment to continuous learning and process improvement.
