The Microbiology Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Microbiology Laboratory by preparing and processing clinical specimens, maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, and performing routine laboratory duties. The technician ensures that specimens are handled accurately and efficiently in compliance with quality, safety, and infection prevention and control standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, accession, centrifuge, aliquot, label, and distribute patient specimens for microbiological analysis.
- Perform sample plating and streaking; assist with Gram staining and other routine microbiological procedures.
- Maintain accurate records using laboratory information systems and manual logs.
- Calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, incubators) and uphold laboratory safety and cleanliness standards.
- Order and manage laboratory supplies and participate in quality control activities.
- Operate microbiology instruments and perform related technical duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support operational requirements.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Laboratory Technician program.
- OSMT, CSMLS, or equivalent certification required, or willingness to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Proficiency in aseptic technique, specimen preparation, and microbiology sample plating and streaking.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory information systems and strong data entry and record-keeping skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
Availability Requirements:
- This position is primarily scheduled for night shifts.
- The successful candidate must be available to work weekdays, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Based on operational requirements, shifts may be reassigned to day, evening, or night schedules as needed.
