Principal Data Engineer (Prin Applications Analyst)

The Data Analytics team within our Information Technology department is seeking a Principal Data Engineer (Principal Applications Analyst).

Key Responsibilities

• Participates in the development of standards, practices and procedures that impact MSTS’s IT capabilities.
• Coordinates/participates in developing work plans, budgets, schedules, personnel assignments and computer use requirements.
• Implements and monitors work plans to ensure adherence to schedules and design specifications.
• Guides data analysts and engineers in systems analysis, development, or maintenance techniques; selection of design alternatives; performance analysis; and programming techniques.
• Participates in data communications projects by:
  • Gathering information, analyzing findings, documenting, preparing conceptual designs, and making presentations.
  • Coordinating or developing and implementing plans for installation and testing.
  • Developing or modifying SQL code.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in data analytics tools and technologies, including but not limited to SQL, Python, R, Power BI, and cloud-based data platforms.
  • Developing and implementing data administration standards regarding validation, integrity, storage, and security of data; internal object naming conventions, and data access methods.
  • Creating data visualizations and reports.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to design and implement data-driven solutions.
  • Identifying potential problems, resolving referred problems, and proposing solutions.
  • Identifying requirements for expanded user capabilities and preparing estimates of capacity for proposed configurations.
• May participate in organizing and assigning Data Analytics and Reporting maintenance and projects tasks.
• May prepare reports on progress and schedule of projects.
• May perform programming and analysis tasks on software development or maintenance projects.
• May provide technical assistance to Analytics User Group as required.
• May ensure appropriate training, tools, hardware, and software are available.
• May participate in management meetings to help define goals and strategies and to solve problems.
• May represent MSTS in contacts with the client, outside businesses, and governmental and military agencies.
• May control expenses within projects and be responsible for meeting budget goals and objectives.
• May provide input to policy level direction regarding standards, budget constraints, etc.

Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or equivalent computer-related experience with at least 8 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience.
• Has command of advanced knowledge of technical principles, theories, standards, and protocols in software development, database administration, or data analytics.
• Ability to coach or mentor less senior staff.
• Ability to lead complex projects that may involve other IT sections, other departments, consultants, as well as outside business units.
• Supports multiple, complex software applications or database platforms.
• Ability to solve complex design problems.
• Must be willing to accept responsibility in new areas and possess the level of technical and analytical skills that will provide successful outcomes to those assignments.
• Must be able to accept assigned responsibilities and manage work to ensure deadlines and milestones are met.
• Must have expert experience in broad range of tools and technology used by NNSS (i.e Microsoft BI Stack (including Power BI), Azure DevOps, Denodo.
• Must have the aptitude and desire to continually learn about new tools and technology and have the ability to evaluate the best solution for stated problems.

• The primary work location is at the Losee Road Facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
• Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change). 
• Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Ability to obtain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification credential under the Department of Energy Order 206.2, ‘Identity, Credential, and Access Management,’ and Supplemental Directive NNSA SD 206.2, ‘Implementation of Personal Identity Verification for Uncleared Contractors.’

Annual salary range for this position is: $118,560.00 - $180,814.40.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
