Security Systems Technician – Service

Company Overview

With over 19 years of experience, Hays Electrical Services is a nationally recognized electrical contractor delivering high-quality, safe, and reliable electrical solutions across commercial, industrial, and specialty markets. Licensed in multiple states and trusted by leading general contractors, Hays is built on a foundation of safety, excellence, drive, communication, and client focus.

Our mission is simple: to make ourselves indispensable to our customers. We achieve this by investing in our people, continuously improving our processes, and delivering results that set the standard in the electrical contracting industry.

Position Summary

The Security Service Technician troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, and administers electronic safety and security (ESS) systems for end-user and owner accounts — access control, IP video, intrusion, and intercom. The role responds to service calls and executes small MAC (moves, adds, and changes) installations.

This is an independent, customer-facing role working primarily in occupied facilities. The technician diagnoses across systems and manufacturers they did not necessarily install, and supports small installation work as part of the service department's scope.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair access control, IP video, intrusion, and intercom systems across multiple manufacturer platforms.

  • Respond to service calls, including after-hours and emergency dispatch on a rotating basis.

  • Perform small installations and MAC work: add or relocate readers, cameras, and doors, and extend existing systems.

  • Configure and reconfigure controllers, cameras, and VMS; apply firmware and software updates.

  • Support customer system administration — users, credentials, schedules, and reporting — and provide end-user training.

  • Diagnose network and connectivity issues affecting devices (IP, switching, PoE).

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and complete service tickets and deficiency reports.

  • Identify and recommend repairs and upgrades; support time-and-materials quoting.

  • Maintain accurate service documentation and as-builts.

  • Represent the company professionally in customer-occupied environments.

  • Manage truck stock, tools, and test equipment.

  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

  • 3+ years of security systems service and troubleshooting experience.

  • Working knowledge of access control, IP video, and intrusion systems across multiple platforms.

  • Network troubleshooting skills: IP addressing, switching, and PoE.

  • Ability to perform small installations and MAC work independently.

  • Strong customer-service orientation and professional communication.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record; willing to participate in an on-call rotation.

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role.

Preferred

  • Manufacturer certifications (e.g., Lenel/S2, Genetec, Avigilon, Milestone, Brivo, Axis, DMP, Bosch).

  • Experience with door hardware and electrified locking systems.

  • Low voltage / alarm technician license where required by state or jurisdiction.

  • Familiarity with healthcare, education, or critical-infrastructure security environments.

  • OSHA 10/30 certification.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a field-based service role performed primarily in occupied, operational customer facilities, with frequent daily travel between multiple sites. The employee must be able to walk sites and uneven terrain; climb and work from ladders and aerial/scissor lifts; work in mechanical/electrical rooms, ceilings, and confined spaces; and stand, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly. The role includes participation in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours or weekend emergency response. Work is performed with appropriate PPE, and the technician is expected to conduct themselves professionally in customer-occupied environments. Must be able to detect, determine, distinguish, inspect, assess, and adjust focus, and distinguish colors for cable and conductor identification. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required.

Management reserves the right to change this position description at any time according to business needs.
