Overview
The Senior Analyst will prepare and manage sales and use tax refund claims for multiple corporate clients across any U.S. state. Our Indirect Tax practice is growing, and this role is designed for an experienced refund professional who can take ownership of claims with minimal oversight, including invoice review, sales tax issue identification, preparation of exemption arguments, and gathering and preparing supporting documents. This role offers a clear path for growth, and little to no travel.
Responsibilities:
- Support sales and use tax refund engagements for multiple clients at once, often with dozens of active claims per client.
- Perform day-to-day reverse audit work, including invoice review, sales tax issue identification, preparation of exemption arguments, and gathering and preparing supporting documents.
- Collaborate with the team and multiple clients to support reverse audit claims with both states and vendors.
- Use prior experience, tax expertise, and tax research tools to draft taxability answers, prepare taxability matrices, and prepare refund claims in any state.
- Extract data from client ERP systems and gather, organize, and interpret data to prepare refund claims.
- Communicate with clients to request data and documentation, respond to requests, and keep refund engagements on track.
- Prepare documentation for state auditor inquiries, appeals, and hearings.
- Track and adhere to all state-required filing deadlines to maintain statute, and prepare claims for additional appeal levels as necessary.
- Develop a working knowledge of Alteryx, an analytical tool the team uses to automate manual data processes for tax purposes.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of sales and use tax experience in a corporate or professional services environment
- Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience preparing sales and use tax refund or reverse audit claims
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite software
- Ability to manage high volume across multiple clients and deadlines
- Impeccable organization skills and attention to detail
- Impeccable communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work with others effectively and demonstrate professionalism when interacting with clients
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred
- Consulting or professional services experience preferred
- Experience with data automation or AI tools, a plus
- CPA not required
- Refund experience in a single state is welcome; mechanics carry across states
