About the role

Position Overview

The AEM Technical Architect owns the architecture and technical direction of complex Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) solutions and digital experience engagements. The role translates business, functional, security, data, integration, performance, and operational requirements into scalable technical designs, implementation patterns, and delivery plans.

This individual leads AEM solution architecture and technical consulting across the project lifecycle, from discovery and estimates through implementation and quality reviews. Working with clients and cross-functional teams, the architect evaluates technology options, resolves architectural risks, guides engineers, and ensures solutions support maintainable, high-performing digital experiences.

Location: Remote - United States
Please note this is a contract role.

Key Responsibilities

AEM Solution Architecture & Technical Direction

  • Lead architecture and technical direction for sophisticated AEM-centric websites, content management, and digital experience solutions, including integration with other enterprise systems.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into architecture designs covering system boundaries, interfaces, data flows, deployment approaches, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Evaluate AEM and adjacent platform capabilities, existing infrastructure, implementation constraints, technical debt, and build-versus-buy options; document decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Diagnose client technical environments and recommend practical architecture and performance improvements.

Delivery Governance & Engineering Quality

  • Guide full-lifecycle solution delivery, including technical discovery, design, development, testing, deployment, and solution readiness.
  • Govern implementation quality through design reviews, architecture checkpoints, risk and exception management, and clear architectural decision records.
  • Provide technical direction to engineering teams on scalable implementation patterns, integrations, troubleshooting, and web performance.
  • Assess complex technical issues, develop solution options, and present recommendations and long-term implications to stakeholders.

Client, Presales & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with client leaders and internal Solutions, Product, Data, Quality, Delivery, and Engineering teams to align technical decisions with business objectives.
  • Support presales discovery, technical scoping, feasibility analysis, solution estimates, and identification of risks and dependencies.
  • Communicate sophisticated architecture decisions clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences and build trusted client relationships.

Mentorship & Practice Improvement

  • Mentor Lead Engineers and Engineers, provide technical guidance, and support knowledge sharing and effective project delivery practices.
  • Develop reusable architecture patterns, accelerators, standards, and lessons learned; stay current with AEM capabilities and evolving engineering practices.

Required Skills & Experience

Architecture & Consulting Leadership

  • 10+ years of relevant software engineering, solution architecture, web content management, or equivalent technical experience, aligned with the 5B Technical Architect level.
  • Experience owning architecture and key technical decisions for complex client engagements, products, or digital solution domains.
  • Experience translating functional and nonfunctional requirements into solution designs, implementation plans, estimates, and architecture decisions.
  • Strong client consulting, stakeholder facilitation, written and verbal communication, and technical presentation skills.

Adobe Experience Manager & Web Technologies

  • Demonstrated expertise designing and leading Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) solutions and integrations with enterprise systems.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented design and Java-based application architecture; understanding of web application performance, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of web and integration technologies such as RESTful services, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, SQL, HTTP, web servers, and content delivery networks.
  • Ability to evaluate architectural tradeoffs, reliability, security, scalability, technical debt, and production-readiness considerations.

Delivery, Collaboration & Governance

  • Experience conducting design reviews, managing technical risks and dependencies, and guiding engineering teams through complex implementation challenges.
  • Experience working with Agile delivery approaches, including Scrum, and supporting technical scoping and estimation.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and collaborate across product, data, quality, delivery, and client teams.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% as required by client assignments.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with AEM as a Cloud Service and AEM-specific technologies such as Apache Sling, OSGi, JCR, Dispatcher, and related caching or CDN configurations.
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environments, Apache web servers, TCP/IP networking, debugging tools, and advanced XML integration patterns.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Role Expectations

Lead architecture and technical delivery within an assigned engagement, product, or domain; make key discipline decisions, manage architecture risks, mentor engineers, and drive high-quality outcomes. An 85% utilization target applies. Depending on client assignments and specialization, additional platform expertise, technical skills, certifications, domain knowledge, or travel may be expected.
