About the role

Big Chief is seeking a detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our accounting team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of critical financial processes and contributing to the overall success of a growing organization.
The Senior Accountant will have primary responsibility for payroll administration across multiple business segments while also supporting month-end close, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and expense management.

Prior payroll experience is preferred but not required. We are looking for a strong corporate accountant with solid technical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to learn and independently manage payroll processes.
The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, dependable, and comfortable handling confidential financial and employee information.

What You'll Do
As our Senior Accountant, you will play an important role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring timely payroll processing, and supporting the efficiency of our accounting operations.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Process biweekly payroll for approximately 130 employees across three business segments, including earnings, deductions, garnishments, and commissions.
  • Manage employee and employer contributions for HSA, FSA, and 401(k) plans.
  • Maintain accurate employee payroll information in Paycor, including tax assignments, direct deposits, and benefit deductions.
  • Serve as the primary contact with Paycor to resolve payroll questions, tax notices, and service-related issues.
  • Prepare payroll journal entries and accruals, reconciling payroll reports to the general ledger and bank activity.
  • Support month-end close activities, including recurring journal entries, financial reconciliations, and other assigned accounting tasks.
  • Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts, including accrued payroll, payroll tax liabilities, benefit withholdings, and prepaid expenses.
  • Research and resolve account discrepancies while maintaining accurate, audit-ready documentation.
  • Administer the company's travel and expense program through Navan, including employee setup, expense reimbursements, corporate card reconciliations, and policy compliance.
  • Manage the corporate cell phone program, including activations, upgrades, transfers, and deactivations.
  • Collaborate with employees, managers, and internal departments to resolve payroll, accounting, and expense-related questions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase operational efficiency.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on corporate accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  • Experience supporting month-end close activities in a corporate accounting environment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and lookup functions.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional judgment and discretion when handling confidential employee and financial information.
  • Ability and willingness to learn payroll administration and related systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous payroll processing experience with a major payroll provider, such as Paycor.
  • Experience with expense management platforms such as Navan, Concur, or Expensify.
  • Experience administering corporate card programs.
Compensation & Benefits
We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:
  • Annual base salary: $68,000–$75,000, based on qualifications and experience.
  • Annual performance-based bonus opportunity with a target of 10%.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and company-paid holidays.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth.
Work Location & Schedule
This is a full-time, primarily in-office position. Regular on-site presence is expected to support collaboration with the accounting team and day-to-day business operations.
