Summary of Position
Runs AIC's supporting manual equipment on 3rd shift - horizontal broach, drill press, saw, slab mill , and planer mill for ID keyways - to prepare and finish components so they keep moving to the next operation. Manual turning and milling are secondary responsibilities as the schedule requires.
Scope
Primary responsibility is the auxiliary (supporting) manual equipment that feeds and finishes work for the CNC and manual machining departments: cutting stock to length, broaching, drilling and tapping, slab milling on Machine 137 and cutting ID keyways on the planer mill. Secondary responsibility is manual turning and manual milling when the schedule calls for it. Works without a supervisor on the floor for part of the shift and escalates problems to the 3rd Shift Production Manager.
Responsibilities
  • Study blueprints, routings and work orders to determine dimensions, tolerances, tooling and sequence of operations.
  • Horizontal broach (primary): set up and run broaching for keyways, splines and other internal forms; select broaches and bushings and check results with gauges.
  • Planer mill (primary): set up and cut ID keyways to drawing size, depth and position.
  • Slab mill - (primary): set up and slab mill to produce keyways to intended specifications
  • Drill press (primary): drill, ream, countersink and tap using fixtures, vises and clamps; locate holes from layout or the drawing.
  • Saw (primary): cut bar, plate and tube stock to length; set blade speed and feed and hold length tolerances.
  • Manual turning and milling (secondary): run manual lathes and Bridgeport-type mills as the schedule requires.
  • Lay out parts with height gauges, scribes and surface plates when no fixture exists; deburr and break edges before parts move on.
  • Check parts with calipers, micrometers, height gauges, keyway, plug gauges and other applicable gauges; record first-piece and in-process checks.
  • Change saw blades and sharpen or replace cutters, broaches and drills; maintain equipment and report machine problems to maintenance.
  • Clock on and off every work order operation accurately; report labor against the correct job.
  • Report any routing, drawing or work instruction problem through the Process Issue Report the same shift.
  • Communicate job status, problems and handoffs to the 1st shift at shift change.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized report safety issues / concerns to management

  • 3+ years of manual machining experience on supporting equipment - broaching, drill press, saws, slab or planer milling.
  • Manual lathe and manual mill experience a plus (secondary duties).

  • Able to use calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators and go/no-go gauges.
  • Ability to work 3rd shift on a consistent schedule; overtime as workload requires.
  • Good attendance and safety record; follows AIC safety rules and PPE requirements.
  • Motivated, accountable self-starter who can work with limited supervision on an off shift.
