Head of Technology & AI

Reports to: Founder & CEO
Location: Remote within Canada, with travel for client and team meetings
Scope: Technology leadership across AEQ’s Financial Services and Innovate businesses

The opportunity

Aequilibrium (AEQ) is a Canadian technology company, listed among the Top 5 Digital Agencies, Fastest Growing Tech Companies, and Top Employers in British Columbia. AEQ is looking for a technology leader to help shape and drive our next stage of growth. You will be a strategic partner to the CEO and business leaders, a credible adviser to clients, and a leader who develops our technical teams.

AI is changing what clients need from professional services. We want to help them make sound choices, improve how work gets done, and bring valuable solutions into production. You will help define where AEQ should lead, build the capabilities behind that direction, and create opportunities with clients.

This is an active role with substantial client involvement. You will lead senior technology conversations, help originate and win engagements, work directly on selected client assignments, and remain accountable for the quality of the solutions we propose and deliver. You will bring particular credibility to our credit union work while helping AEQ grow in healthcare, government, and other sectors.

What you will own

Set direction and build the practice

• Develop and execute AEQ’s technology and AI strategy, with a focused set of priorities, investments, and measurable outcomes.
• Identify emerging client needs and turn them into advisory offerings, pilots and repeatable services.
• Build a point of view on how AI changes software delivery and the value clients expect from a technology partner.
• Decide, with our business leaders, where AEQ should build expertise, form partnerships, or pursue new markets.
• Take ownership of progress: bring the right people together, resolve obstacles, and move priorities from discussion to delivery.

Create opportunities and lead clients

• Build trusted relationships with senior client leaders and help them navigate complex technology and AI decisions.
• Work with Sales and Delivery to develop opportunities, lead discovery, and shape proposals, architectures, estimates, and delivery plans.
• Serve on selected client engagements as a principal architect, strategic adviser, or fractional technology leader.
• Connect technology choices to business outcomes, commercial realities, implementation risk, and the client’s ability to sustain the solution.
• Provide technical leadership from the first client conversation through delivery, especially when an engagement changes direction or encounters a difficult decision.

Make AI useful and responsible

• Lead AEQ’s AI initiatives with a clear purpose, committed capacity, and a small number of valuable initiatives.
• Work with clients and teams to identify uses of AI with a credible path from experiment to production.
• Establish practical approaches to human review, privacy, security, quality and measurement.
• Turn successful work into capabilities AEQ can demonstrate, deliver and support, not isolated experiments.

Develop our people

• Coach senior technologists and help them grow as architects, client advisers and leaders.
• Set clear expectations for technical ownership, decision-making and collaboration across teams.
• Strengthen engineering and architecture practices using lessons from client delivery.
• Help recruit people who add technical depth, sound judgment and initiative to AEQ.

What you bring

• A demonstrated record of initiating, winning, and delivering technology consulting or professional services work. We will ask what you personally identified, built, and brought to a result.
• Deep enough technical experience to earn the trust of architects and engineers, combined with the judgment to lead business conversations.
• Experience advising senior clients, shaping complex proposals and making commitments that delivery teams can meet.
• Practical understanding of modern software architecture, cloud, integration, data and AI—including where AI is useful and where it introduces risk.
• Experience developing technical leaders and building capabilities that extend beyond your own contributions.
• Commercial understanding of a services business: scope, pricing, staffing, utilization, partnerships and client outcomes.

Experience with credit unions, digital banking, or core modernization is a strong advantage. We also welcome leaders with relevant experience in healthcare, government, or other complex environments. Expertise in a particular vendor platform is not required.

How you will work at AEQ

You will report to the CEO and partner closely with the leaders of Financial Services sales, Delivery, and Innovate. You will lead our technology direction while giving senior technologists meaningful ownership in their areas of expertise.

We expect approximately half your time to involve clients and pursuits as the practice develops, including paid advisory work, solution leadership and strategic presales. We will set billable and commercial targets separately so the time required to build the practice is clear.

What success looks like after six months

• AEQ has a focused technology and AI plan that the leadership team and technical leads are actively executing.
• You have helped originate or advance meaningful client opportunities, with clear evidence of your contribution.
• Major pursuits and engagements have credible technical leadership, sound estimates, and clear delivery ownership.
• The AI pod has demonstrated a valuable capability and has a defined route to a client pilot or production use.
• Clients seek AEQ’s advice on consequential technology decisions, and our technical leads have grown through your coaching and trust.

Compensation

This full-time executive role offers a base salary of CAD $160,000–$200,000, plus a performance bonus tied to agreed business growth, client, and leadership outcomes. The successful candidate will also be eligible for consideration for stock option grants under AEQ’s executive stock option plan, subject to the plan terms and grant approval.
