Position Overview:
The Technical Lead, AV / AV Design Engineer serves as the regional technical subject matter expert and hands-on design resource for Microsoft audiovisual conference room deployments in the Puget Sound region. The role owns the production, validation, and quality assurance of room-specific AV drawing packages and associated technical documentation from design development through installation, commissioning, and handover.
This is not a drawing-review-only position. The successful candidate must be able to independently produce accurate AutoCAD deliverables, adapt Microsoft standard room designs to actual architectural conditions, coordinate with architects and construction stakeholders, and release complete packages without requiring extensive corrective review by the Regional Lead or customer.
What you will do as the Technical Lead, AV:
The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This job description is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the duties and responsibilities of the position, and the duties and responsibilities may change without notice.
- Act as the technical SME for AV deployments, educating project teams on Microsoft AV standards, deviation processes, design risks, and technical requirements.
- Create, revise, and maintain room-specific AV design packages in AutoCAD using Microsoft standard room designs, site survey data, architectural backgrounds, and project-specific requirements.
- Produce and quality-assure floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, sections, equipment layouts, rack elevations, wiring diagrams, device callouts, mounting details, and construction notes.
- Import, scale, align, and manage architect-provided DWG and Revit-exported CAD backgrounds, including external references, layers, viewports, plotting standards, and title blocks.
- Validate that drawing sets render correctly to PDF and that all required layers, furniture, equipment, dimensions, annotations, and references are visible and accurate.
- Perform independent QA/QC before release, including redline closure, drawing completeness, dimensional accuracy, source-file integrity, version control, and compliance with Microsoft drawing standards.
- Validate AV conference room designs and bills of materials based on site survey results, ensuring that every equipment item shown in drawings is represented in the BOM and that BOM changes are reflected in the drawing package.
- Coordinate AV design requirements with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, network, furniture, lighting, acoustic, and general-contractor documentation, including MEP integration where applicable.
- Use floor plans, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, photographs, surveys, and Microsoft source repositories to identify room constraints and adjust standard designs to actual site conditions.
- Assess power, network, cable pathway, conduit, back-box, structural mounting, equipment clearance, sightline, heat-load, lighting, acoustic, and service-access requirements that affect the AV design.
- Support schematic design, design development, construction-document, and as-built stages, including design page-turns and stakeholder approvals.
- Manage drawing comments and markups using Bluebeam or equivalent review tools; incorporate architect, Microsoft, AV integrator, HIVE, AV Link, and project-team feedback into controlled revisions.
- Respond to RFIs and provide technical clarification during procurement, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Identify designs that require a Microsoft standards deviation, support submission of the deviation request, and update the design after approval or technical guidance.
- Maintain complete and current source files, CAD backgrounds, drawings, markups, BOMs, configuration documents, and revision history in approved shared project repositories rather than local or personal storage.
- Partner closely with Project Managers, the Puget Sound Regional Lead, architects, general contractors, AV integrators, Microsoft engineering partners, vendors, and field teams to resolve design issues and protect schedule and quality.
- Participate in retrospectives, root-cause reviews, and lessons-learned sessions to reduce rework and improve design standards, templates, and quality controls.
What you will bring to the team:
- 5+ years of professional AV systems engineering, AV design, or audiovisual drafting experience, including hands-on production of construction-quality drawing packages.
- Advanced proficiency with Autodesk AutoCAD for 2D drafting and documentation. Candidates must be able to independently create, edit, scale, reference, layer, annotate, plot, and troubleshoot DWG files.
- Demonstrated experience producing floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, sections, rack elevations, signal-flow or wiring diagrams, equipment details, and as-built documentation.
- Experience using architect-provided CAD backgrounds and Revit exports, including external references, scaling, coordinate alignment, layer management, and conversion-quality validation.
- Experience adapting standardized AV designs to existing spaces, new construction, tenant improvements, executive rooms, innovation or experience-center spaces, multipurpose rooms, and other custom environments.
- Strong understanding of enterprise AV systems, including Microsoft Teams Rooms, displays, projectors, cameras, microphones, loudspeakers, DSP, control systems, AV-over-IP, switching, racks, network connectivity, and structured cabling.
- Working knowledge of architectural and construction documentation, including MEP coordination, power, network, structural mounting, cable pathways, acoustics, lighting, furniture, and accessibility considerations.
- Experience validating bills of materials and configuration documentation against drawings and project requirements.
- Experience with Bluebeam Revu or comparable PDF markup and redline workflows.
- Proven ability to perform self-QA/QC and deliver accurate, customer-ready packages with minimal oversight or rework.
- Proven ability to resolve technical escalations, respond to RFIs, and support field teams during installation and commissioning.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues, decisions, and risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize urgent corrections, meet committed deadlines, and escalate blockers early.
- Ability to work during Pacific Time business hours and collaborate with local Puget Sound stakeholders; availability for onsite meetings, site walks, or drawing coordination sessions as required.
- At least one AVIXA industry certification such as CTS; CTS-D is strongly preferred. CTS-I may be considered when paired with substantial design and AutoCAD experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting Microsoft AV deployments, Microsoft Teams Rooms, or another large enterprise AV program with formal design standards and deviation governance.
- Experience with Microsoft Nexus or similar AV standards catalogs and with Microsoft project disciplines such as GWS, lifecycle refresh, Hub, ad hoc, or construction projects.
- Working knowledge of Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or BIM coordination workflows.
- Manufacturer or platform certifications from Extron, Crestron, Shure, Cisco, Poly, Logitech, Biamp, Q-SYS, or equivalent AV technology providers.
- Experience working with architects, design firms, general contractors, AV integrators, and owners-representative teams in the Puget Sound market.
- Familiarity with SharePoint, OneNote, Microsoft Teams, OnePlan, and structured document-control practices.
Success Measures:
- Drawing packages are complete, accurate, properly scaled, and compliant before customer submission.
- Design outputs align with BOMs, configuration documentation, site conditions, and approved Microsoft standards or deviations.
- Rework, repeat redlines, and post-submission corrections are minimized.
- Design commitments are met, risks are surfaced early, and source documentation remains organized and accessible.
- Project Managers and the Regional Lead receive timely, technically sound support without becoming the primary drawing-quality checkpoint.
Qualified Candidates can expect a salary of $100,000
