About the role
Company Overview:
Function Health is the AI operating system for health, designed to empower people to live 100 healthy years. We are redefining how individuals understand, measure, and improve their health by moving beyond the limitations of traditional care and enabling comprehensive, continuous insight into human biology. Function has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024, and is venture-backed by Redpoint and other leading venture firms. Over half a million members have joined Function to take control of their health.
Through comprehensive lab testing, MRI and CT imaging, longitudinal data, and guidance from AI and clinical teams, Function gives members a complete and continuous view of their health — and the clarity to act on it. Through acquisitions across imaging, mobile phlebotomy, and supplement tracking and optimization, Function is building an integrated health platform that spans the full path from testing to health clarity to daily action.
Function recently announced a $298M Series B and is entering its next chapter of growth. As we scale, the quality and durability of our People systems, data, and insights will directly shape our ability to attract, retain, and support exceptional talent.
We are growing our team and seeking out world-class talent that deeply believes in our mission to positively impact global health, has a relentless bias toward action, and a growth mindset. Function fosters a collaborative and dynamic environment where every day we build the future.
Role:
The Director, Revenue Accounting will own revenue and direct-cost accounting for Function's consumer revenue business — labs, scans, mobile phlebotomy, supplements, and the products we launch next — and be accountable for the contribution margin these streams produce, not just the revenue they book. You'll own the monthly close for these streams and the accuracy of the revenue and margin reporting leadership relies on.
Today, each of these streams closes on a different system, through a different process, and with support from a mix of in-house staff and outside firms and contractors. Your mandate is to bring this work in house and onto one consistent process — and to use automation, including AI tools and agents, to take as much manual effort out of the close as the underlying systems allow, so the process holds as Function scales. You'll build and lead the team behind these streams, with a direct hand in bringing each new addition onto a standard process from day one.
You will report to the Senior Director, Revenue Accounting & Operations and operate as a senior leader within a lean, high-autonomy team. Revenue accounting for our consumer business is still being built, so you'll have real influence over how it runs — from the close calendar to the systems and people behind it — rather than stepping into a process someone else already defined. It's a strong fit if you're energized by ambiguity, meticulous about the details that make a close accurate, and motivated by the opportunity to build something meaningful in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own revenue and direct-cost accounting for Function's consumer business — labs, scans, mobile phlebotomy, supplements — and be the reporting authority on the margin those streams produce for leadership.
- Bring the close in house and onto one process, replacing outside firms, contractors, and the patchwork of systems inherited from each stream.
- Automate month-end, including using AI tools and agents to eliminate manual work, so the close scales with volume instead of headcount.
- Fold new products into that same standard as they launch or come on board, rather than letting each one start its own process.
- Hire and develop the team running these streams, expanding their ownership as the group grows.
- Own the audit relationship for consumer revenue — presenting methodology and keeping controls and documentation SOX-ready.
Qualifications/Skills:
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with direct, in-house ownership of a consumer or health tech revenue close. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; Big 4 public accounting experience is strongly preferred.
- Deep, applied command of US GAAP and ASC 606 for subscription and service revenue, with the judgment to set close policy as new products launch.
- Experience maturing a raw or early-stage accounting function into a standardized process — standing up the internal systems and controls.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools or AI agents in month-end close or accounting workflows, with specific examples of work you've automated.
- People management experience — you've hired, managed, and developed managers or senior accountants, and can build a team while running the function day to day.
- Comfortable making the call without precedent — building a consistent process across streams that don't yet run the same way.
- Experience with contribution margin or direct-cost accounting by revenue stream, not only top-line revenue recognition.
Nice to have items
- CPA certification (or equivalent).
- Experience integrating an acquired business's revenue accounting into a parent company's close process.
- SQL or other data-querying experience sufficient to independently investigate transaction-level data.
- Experience with subscription-based, membership, or consumer health/tech business models.
- Hands-on experience with Rillet or a similar revenue recognition automation platform.
Your dedication to these responsibilities will directly contribute to the success of our platform and the satisfaction of our users. We are looking for a proactive, skilled, and forward-thinking individual to join our team and help shape the future of our services.
