About the role

Our Story and Purpose

Linden Lab develops platforms that empower people to create, connect, and thrive through transformative virtual experiences. Since our founding in 1999, we have been at the forefront of the creator economy, pioneering virtual experiences that support limitless imagination, self-expression, and human connection.

In 2003, we launched Second Life, a vibrant, user-driven virtual world that has grown into a living global community. Hundreds of thousands of people spend time there building relationships, expressing themselves, and creating meaning together. With over two billion user creations and a flourishing $650 million economy, Second Life also enables people to build real livelihoods through their creativity.

Unlike traditional social media, Second Life fosters sustained, positive connections between strangers. It offers mobility, agency, and opportunities for participation to people whose real-world circumstances may limit their options, creating space for belonging.

The same principles that shape our communities guide how we work. We value diverse perspectives, strengths-based leadership, organizational health, and the belief that collaborative teams are stronger than individuals.

At Linden Lab, your work helps shape how people connect, create, and build meaningful lives online. You’ll be part of a thoughtful, mission-driven team working on technology with real social impact and uncommon longevity. We invite you to come as you are.

Working Together, In Person

This role requires working onsite in our San Francisco office for full workdays Monday through Thursday. Employees have the flexibility to work remotely or from the office on Fridays as part of their regular five-day workweek. Before applying, please consider whether this ongoing schedule and your expected commute are a good long-term fit.

Our San Francisco office is designed to bring people together, with spaces for brainstorming, team building, and spontaneous conversations. We believe working in person strengthens collaboration, builds relationships, and creates opportunities to exchange ideas and solve problems together.

Your Mission

We’re looking for a Corporate Controller to own our accounting operations, financial close, and external reporting, while continuously improving how we work. As a trusted partner to our CFO and cross-functional leaders, you’ll bring financial clarity to the decisions that shape our growth and build an accounting organization that helps us scale responsibly.

You’ll lead and develop a high-performing accounting team, modernizing operations through AI, automation, and more efficient processes while maintaining strong internal controls in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

The Impact You’ll Drive

  • Lead global accounting operations, including the month-end close, record-to-report cycle, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting.
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable regulatory and statutory reporting requirements in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing accounting team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement across a distributed organization.
  • Modernize accounting operations through AI, automation, and process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Partner with the CFO on tax strategy, overseeing its implementation and managing indirect tax compliance across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Lead accounting integration and valuation activities related to mergers and acquisitions.
  • Partner with FP&A on financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and related accruals to support informed business decisions.
  • Oversee external audits, ensuring accurate financial reporting and effective coordination with independent auditors.

How You’ll Shape Our Future

At Linden, we celebrate all the dimensions of diversity, including diversity of experience. We recognize that candidates applying for this role will be most successful if they bring the following with them:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with emphasis in accounting or finance; CPA required.
  • 15+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant leadership responsibility and experience in public accounting.
  • Deep technical accounting expertise, including U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and complex accounting matters.
  • Demonstrated success building and developing high-performing accounting teams, fostering accountability and professional growth.
  • Proven ability to design, optimize, and scale accounting processes and systems in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing AI and automation to improve accounting operations, championing adoption, modeling hands-on use, and fostering continuous innovation.
  • Strong strategic and operational judgment, including experience with mergers and acquisitions, accounting integration, and effective partnership with senior leadership.

If you don’t meet every requirement listed for this role, we still encourage you to apply. Too often, the confidence gap or imposter syndrome keeps exceptional candidates from taking the leap—and we don’t want that to hold you back. If you believe in our mission and in your ability to make an impact, we want to hear from you!
