About the role

Summary:

The Director, Software Engineering, is responsible for leading the software engineering organization responsible for Cosm’s real-time video, media processing, and distributed technology platforms. This role provides both technical and organizational leadership across teams building mission-critical systems supporting Cosm’s venues, broadcast operations, league partners, and streaming experiences. The Director will lead and develop engineering teams, establish technical direction, improve engineering processes, and partner closely with Product, Video Technology, Broadcast Engineering, Operations, and other cross-functional teams to translate business and technology objectives into scalable software solutions. This is an engineering leadership role rather than an individual contributor position. The ideal candidate brings a strong software engineering background and enough technical depth to guide architecture, evaluate engineering decisions, and mentor senior technical leaders, while focusing primarily on building high-performing teams, setting priorities, removing organizational barriers, and ensuring consistent execution across the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

Lead, manage, and develop software engineering teams responsible for real-time video, media processing, distributed systems, cloud services, and supporting technology platforms.

Build and scale a high-performing engineering organization through hiring, coaching, career development, performance management, and development of engineers and technical leaders.

Establish clear engineering priorities, ownership, and accountability while aligning team roadmaps and execution with broader Video Technology and company objectives.

Partner with senior technical leaders across the organization to establish architectural direction and ensure solutions are scalable, reliable, performant, secure, and maintainable.

Work closely with Product, Broadcast Engineering, Operations, and other cross-functional leaders to translate business requirements and strategic initiatives into executable engineering roadmaps.

Own engineering execution across the software development lifecycle, including planning, architecture, development, testing, deployment, observability, operational support, and incident response.

Establish and continuously improve engineering standards and processes around code quality, architecture reviews, CI/CD, documentation, testing, release management, and production readiness.

Balance near-term delivery requirements with long-term investments in architecture, technical debt reduction, platform scalability, reliability, and engineering efficiency.

Drive a culture of technical excellence, experimentation, and innovation while ensuring new technologies are evaluated against clear technical and business requirements.

Communicate engineering strategy, technical tradeoffs, project status, organizational needs, risks, and resource requirements clearly to technical and non-technical leadership.

Experience:

BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical / Computer Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.

10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years of engineering management experience

Demonstrated success building, scaling, mentoring, and retaining high-performing software engineering teams and developing future technical and people leaders.

Strong technical foundation with the ability to guide architecture, challenge technical assumptions, evaluate tradeoffs, and provide direction to senior engineers

Experience leading teams responsible for complex, distributed, high-performance, real-time, or mission-critical systems, preferably within video, broadcast, streaming media, or media processing environments.

Technical fluency across multiple programming languages and technology stacks, which may include C++, Rust, C#, Python, Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar modern languages.

Strong understanding of modern software architecture, APIs, distributed systems, AWS cloud infrastructure, Windows and Linux environments, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, source control, and modern DevOps practices.

Experience with real-time media technologies, including video codecs and streaming transports such as HEVC, MPEG-TS, SRT, HLS, WebRTC, RTP, or ST 2110, as well as multimedia or GPU-accelerated frameworks such as GStreamer, FFmpeg, NVIDIA CUDA, or the NVIDIA Video Codec SDK.

Experience establishing engineering roadmaps, development processes, technical standards, and measurable expectations while balancing technical quality, business priorities, engineering capacity, and delivery timelines.

Strong cross-functional leadership and communication skills, with experience partnering across Product, Operations, Infrastructure, Hardware, and executive leadership; experience with cloud-based media workflows, AI/ML, hardware/software integration, or significant platform modernization is highly valued.
