Hardware Systems Engineer, Prime Air, Avionics Hardware

As a Systems Hardware Engineer on our team, you will be responsible for systems level integration and validation of the flight-critical avionics hardware throughout its lifetime. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams - including propulsion, structures, firmware, software, safety, certification, production - to design, develop, and implement integration and validation solutions at the hardware level and meet the highest standards of safety and reliability at the drone level.

This role requires experience in analog/digital hardware systems and automated lab test development. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with hardware design engineering verification process, ensuring avionics hardware meets performance, safety and reliability specifications.

Key job responsibilities
- Validate hardware interfaces and unblock system integration across the avionics system.
- Architect, design, build, and operate test systems for drone avionics hardware at the bring-up, sub-system, and system levels.
- Develop and execute comprehensive verification and validation test plans, including qualification and compliance against aerospace standards (e.g., DO-160, DO-254).
- Analyze test data, generate test reports with recommendations, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Perform root cause analysis on hardware system failures, develop and implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement of validation processes and manufacturing reliability.
- Contribute to manufacturing, in-service, and reliability initiatives for avionics hardware in production environments.

A day in the life
Our team is empowered to assess, judge, decide and move between analysis, design, and validation challenges with bias to action. The goal is to make sound engineering decisions throughout the product lifetime.

You might begin the morning analyzing requirements, review test data, update a test script model based on what you learned. You could work alongside peers to evaluate a design change, or resolve competing validation requirements. You may spend the afternoon troubleshooting a hardware failure, preparing for a design review, working with a supplier, or developing a test system.

Prime Air is Amazon's autonomous drone delivery service. Our mission is to build a safe, ultra-fast, and convenient drone delivery system that transforms the way packages are delivered to customers worldwide. Avionics Hardware Team at Prime Air develops and sustains Electrical and Electronics (EE) Hardware for the avionics systems of autonomous drones - including flight computers, air data sensors, cameras, radars, lighting systems, and electrical wiring interconnect systems - at Amazon's delivery scale.

Basic qualifications

- BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
- 2+ years of hardware design and validation of components, subsystems and systems experience
- Experience with coding/scripting in one or more languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, Ruby, or PowerShell)

Preferred qualifications

- Relevant experience with drones, electric vehicles, robotics, satellites, automation, or similarly complex systems that relies on electrical-mechanical-software interfaces.
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.
- Experience with aerospace or aviation electronics and applicable standards (DO-160, DO-254).
- Experience in avionics hardware design and integration for aerospace applications (air data sensors, cameras, radar, IMUs, LIDAR).

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
