How Many Tech Jobs Are Actually Remote? We Counted 57,000 Postings
Of US tech job postings that say where the work happens, 31% are fully remote, 26% are hybrid and 43% are on-site. In Canada the split is almost the same: 33% remote, 25% hybrid, 42% on-site. Pay is where the two countries part ways. In the US, remote postings advertise a median of US$182,500, a little below on-site roles (US$190,000). In Canada, remote postings advertise CA$164,000, about 36% more than on-site roles (CA$121,000).
These numbers come from 57,281 open tech job postings on LANDTHATROLE on September 24, 2026: 51,478 in the United States and 5,803 in Canada, each taken from the employer's own hiring system. The method is at the end of this article.
Remote, hybrid or on-site: the split
The first finding is how many postings don't say. In the US, 44% of tech postings give no work arrangement at all; in Canada, 27%. Shares below are given two ways: out of every posting, and out of postings that state an arrangement.
| Arrangement | US postings | Share of all | Share of those that say | Canada postings | Share of all | Share of those that say |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fully remote | 8,999 | 17.5% | 31.4% | 1,400 | 24.1% | 32.8% |
| Hybrid | 7,421 | 14.4% | 25.9% | 1,078 | 18.6% | 25.3% |
| On-site | 12,272 | 23.8% | 42.8% | 1,786 | 30.8% | 41.9% |
| Not stated | 22,786 | 44.3% | 1,539 | 26.5% |
So roughly one in three tech jobs that states an arrangement is fully remote, in both countries. A missing arrangement doesn't mean on-site. Many employers only say it in the description or the location line, so read the full posting before you rule a job in or out.
Which tech fields are most remote
Customer-facing technical roles and data roles are the most remote. Hardware is the least, for the obvious reason that the hardware is in the building. Shares are out of postings that state an arrangement, for fields with enough postings to say something.
| Field (US) | Postings that say | Fully remote |
|---|---|---|
| Sales and solutions engineering | 1,979 | 46.5% |
| Cloud and architecture | 616 | 46.3% |
| Data and analytics | 1,077 | 43.1% |
| Product and UX | 2,963 | 39.3% |
| Cybersecurity | 944 | 36.0% |
| Data engineering | 708 | 34.5% |
| AI and machine learning | 1,734 | 28.1% |
| Engineering leadership | 1,451 | 26.3% |
| Software engineering | 7,209 | 25.4% |
| DevOps and infrastructure | 1,659 | 25.0% |
| IT and systems | 803 | 22.4% |
| IT support and help desk | 165 | 12.7% |
| Hardware and semiconductors | 331 | 6.0% |
Canada follows a similar order, with one difference worth knowing: Canadian software engineering postings are more often remote than American ones, 39.2% against 25.4% (of 1,176 Canadian postings that state an arrangement). Product and UX (47.8%) and sales and solutions engineering (48.5%) top the Canadian list.
Does remote pay less?
In the US, slightly, and not everywhere. Among postings that list annual pay, the median remote posting advertises US$182,500, against US$190,000 on-site and US$195,000 hybrid. Within fields the gap goes both ways:
- Software engineering: US$196,500 remote, US$205,000 on-site.
- AI and machine learning: US$195,000 remote, US$225,000 on-site.
- Product and UX: US$186,500 remote, US$200,000 on-site.
- DevOps and infrastructure: US$175,750 remote, US$171,000 on-site.
- Engineering leadership: US$225,000 remote, US$216,750 on-site.
In Canada the pattern flips, and not by a little:
| Canada | Median advertised salary | Postings with annual pay |
|---|---|---|
| Fully remote | CA$164,000 | 612 |
| Hybrid | CA$138,000 | 563 |
| On-site | CA$121,000 | 674 |
The gap holds within fields where there's enough data: Canadian software engineering postings advertise a median of CA$166,000 remote against CA$131,000 on-site, and product and UX CA$160,000 against CA$137,000.
The employers behind those postings are the likely reason. Many of the biggest remote hirers in Canada are US-headquartered tech companies, such as Affirm, GitLab, Instacart and Grafana Labs, which tend to pay more than the local market. On-site Canadian postings include more local employers and more roles in lower-paid fields. That's an explanation, not something this data can prove, but for a Canadian job seeker the practical point stands: remote roles are where the higher advertised pay is.
Remote jobs are more likely to show pay, especially in Canada
In Canada, 54% of remote postings list pay, against 41% of on-site postings. In the US the shares are closer: 68% remote, 65% on-site and 74% hybrid. Counts include pay written in the job description, not just the hiring system's salary field. Across all postings, see the Tech Hiring Report.

What this means if you want a remote tech job
- Don't skip "not stated" postings. Nearly half of US postings don't say. Check the description and the location line before you decide.
- Read what "remote" covers. A remote posting is often limited to one country, and sometimes to certain states, provinces or time zones. The location line usually says which.
- Look at the field, not just the title. Sales and solutions engineering, cloud, data and product roles are remote far more often than hardware or IT support.
- In Canada, remote roles pay more on average. If you're comparing a local on-site offer with a remote role at a US-headquartered company, compare the actual numbers; the gap in advertised pay is large.
- Browse remote jobs directly. Remote tech jobs on LANDTHATROLE come from employers' own hiring systems. Canadians can also read our guide to remote jobs in Canada, which covers tax and working for a US employer.
Method
Counts cover every open tech job posting on LANDTHATROLE on September 24, 2026. Each posting comes from an employer's own hiring system (about 28,500 employer job boards on 23 systems, checked several times a day). The work arrangement comes from the hiring system's work-mode field, or from the location text when that field is empty. Fields are assigned by job title keywords. Pay is the midpoint of the posted annual range, in US dollars for US postings and Canadian dollars for Canadian postings, whether the range is in the hiring system's salary field or written in the description. A median is shown only when at least 25 postings back it. Advertised ranges are what employers offer new hires, not what current staff earn. We read up to 250 postings from each board, so the few largest employers are undercounted.
